Why study at Telford?

As a graduate of the Telford Certificate in Forestry you are extremely employable. Many of our students are offered jobs while undertaking their work experience at the end of the course.  Telford is New Zealand’s specialist Forestry provider that can provide you with a sound balance of knowledge and skills, to apply to career opportunities or onto further study.

Telford is situated on 921 hectares of rolling, South Otago farmland with sheep and beef, dairy, deer and equine units plus apiculture and forestry blocks. Mechanics, carpentry and welding workshops are within two minutes walk of Telford’s halls of residence.

Telford’s Certificate in Forestry will equip you with the practical knowledge and skills that are required for the forestry industry, especially for silviculture and harvesting. Course numbers are strictly limited, so early enrolment is encouraged. Telford offers small classes with a ‘HANDS ON’ training emphasis. Regular course review ensures that we are providing the most up-to-date and appropriate programme.


 

 

 

Although the majority of your time is spent outside the classroom, there is a need to fully understand various forestry theory, safety, and financial issues as well.

You will gain real-life, practical, forestry skills, including saw maintenance, tree felling, log selection, pruning and tree biology. An extremely worthwhile course which has been developed and refined over a 10 year period by logging experts at Telford, in conjunction with the latest forestry techniques & equipment.

We make sure that you not only understand what you are doing, but that you can act in a safe & professional manner.

Programme Content

Telford’s forestry programme has a strong practical focus and is designed to give you a broad understanding of the industry. You will develop a thorough understanding of silviculture, harvesting, chainsaw operation and maintenance, forest planting, pruning and thinning, health and safety, environmental issues and much more. You can expect to spend the majority of your time away from the Telford campus, working with the tutor and trainers in local forests, and with forestry crews throughout Otago.

This course is ideal if you want to gain hands-on experience while learning the finer points of safe, effective forestry management. As part of the course, you will also complete seven-weeks work experience with a logging or silviculture crew.

Practical work

The majority of Telford’s course is spent outside the classroom, accompanied by Telford’s tutor and trainers in forests throughout Otago. You will undertake 7 weeks work experience with a logging or silvicultural crew, prior to completion of this course.

Career opportunities

This programme has a 99% employment success rate. After you graduate, you will be able to work in silviculture or harvesting crews (i.e. Tree Feller, Log Maker and Pruner/Planter). In previous years, graduates have won a number of awards, including the Forestry Harvesting Apprentice of the Year.

Duration

One academic Year (37 weeks); starting February

Entry Requirements

Age 16 years and over; have academic and physical capability to successfully complete the course.

There are optional opportunities to gain your First Aid Certificate, GrowSafe Certificate, Food Safety Certificate, Heavy Traffic and Firearms licences are available through third party providers.
