Telford Certificate in Apiculture (Level 3)

Why study at Telford?

Beekeeping offers many exciting career opportunities, both in New Zealand and abroad, ranging from the hobbyist beekeeper through to ownership of a commercial beekeeping operation, research, or industry consultancy. Telford Rural Polytechnic is New Zealand’s national training institute for beekeeping.

Telford is a specialist rural polytechnic, situated on 800 hectares of rolling, South Otago farmland with sheep and beef, dairy, deer and equine units plus apiculture and forestry blocks. Mechanics, carpentry and welding workshops are within two minutes walk of Telford’s halls of residence.

Beekeeping involves more than just producing honey. New  Zealand’s primary sector is dependent on healthy pollination of fruit, seed and nut crops for its survival. Beekeeping has an essential role to play in this process and Telford can train you to be skilled and highly employable. Telford offers small classes with a ‘HANDS ON’ training emphasis. Regular course review ensures that we are providing the most up-to-date and appropriate programme.

The course includes special projects and has a good mix of both practical and theory. Your skills will have much broader application than honey collection and processing alone and should enable you to confidently work in a range of  areas in the industry. Our on-farm facilities and equipment coupled with off-farm visits and tuition from commercial apiarists during work experience, apiculture field-days, and workshops provide you with the widest possible knowledge of the beekeeping industry

Telford offers you the opportunity to undertake a four week queen bee rearing block course and complete a further six months through part-time correspondence study to graduate with a Telford Certificate in Queen Bee Rearing (Level 4).
