Telford Rural Polytechnic is New Zealand’s only specialist rural polytechnic that can provide you with a sound balance of knowledge and skills, to apply to career opportunities in the rural sector, or onto further study.


Telford is situated on 800 hectares of rolling, South Otago farmland with sheep and beef, dairy, deer and equine units plus apiculture and forestry blocks. Mechanics, carpentry and welding  workshops are within two minutes walk of Telford’s halls of residence.


Telford’s Diploma has been developed by industry professionals from all aspects of farm practice to equip you for supervisory roles within the primary sector. Diploma graduates are highly sought after for their skills and expertise. Many of our graduates are now working in key industry positions with high levels of responsibility.

Semester 1

The Telford Diploma in Rural Business (Level 5) is designed to give students a better transition from the Level 2 and 3 certificates to the Level 5 capabilities that are required in the Diploma programme – i.e. a smoother transition from programmes that are predominately practical to programmes that are predominately theory.

 
Topics covered include:
Course 1:-  Physical Property Resources
Course 2:-  Practicum 1 (fencing, animal handling, tractors, pastures)
Course 3:-  Production 1 (health, breeding, feeding, production performance)
Course 4:-  Professional Skills 1 (business planning, current sector issues, financial skills, research and report writing, oral presentation, computer skills)
 
Work Experience

You Will have tutor- supervised work experience to reinforce and further develop skills learnt during Certificate studies. There will be work experience throughout semester 1 and 2.  During your work experience throughout the year, you will be required to gather data related to various aspects of production and process this data into meaningful information. From this information you will extract recommendations and decisions about production strategies.

 
Semester 2
At the end of semester one you may choose to exit with the Telford Certificate in Advanced Rural Production (Level 4) or you may continue on to complete the Telford Diploma in Rural Business. This course provides you with a higher level of learning that will enable you to progress more rapidly to management roles.
 
Topics covered include
Course 5:- Resource Management (risk, sustainability, livestock trading, health and safety)
Course 6:- Professional Skills 2 (current sector issues, human resources, financial skills, advance livestock production, presentation skills)
Course 7:- Practicum 4 (soil analysis, water analysis, effluent issues, harvesting, feed budgets, monitoring objectives and action plans, market analysis)
Course 8:- Financial Management (budgeting and planning investment and development strategies, agribusiness economics)

Entry requirements
A level 3 qualification in rural studies including a basic knowledge of livestock, pastures and soils, and practical skills in an appropriate context (e.g. with livestock).  There must be a reasonable likelihood of success at level 5, with good study habits and should literacy and numeracy skills.

Five and seven day boarding is available in our on-campus hall of residence.
